Analysis of the Number of Packaging Damages in Cup Milk Productsin the Dairy Industry in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta

A defect or product flaw refers to a condition in which a product fails to meet predetermined quality standards and therefore requires repair or rework. This study aims to analyze the occurrence and causes of defects in cup milk products produced by a dairy industry. The research was conducted during an internship period using several data collection methods, including direct observation of the production process, interviews with the operations manager, and a review of relevant literature. Packaging is a critical component in maintaining the quality and safety of dairy products. It functions not only as a protective barrier against physical, chemical, and microbiological contamination, but also plays an essential role in preserving the freshness, taste, and nutritional value of milk during storage and distribution. High-quality packaging can reduce product damage, extend shelf life, and provide essential product information to consumers, thereby increasing consumer trust. The collected data were analyzed using quality control tools, namely control charts and a fishbone diagram. The analysis identified two dominant types of defects: loosely sealed cup lids and underfilled cups. The results indicate that the level of packaging damage did not exceed control limits, suggesting that defect rates were still within acceptable standards. However, several factors contributed to the defects, particularly human error caused by employee fatigue due to a high volume of orders. In addition, the use of semi-manual packaging machines increased workload and reduced sealing accuracy. The percentage of defects consisted of 52.42% loosely sealed lids and 47.58% underfilled cups. Overall, these findings indicate that although defects are present, the packaging quality remains within a reasonable and controlled range.
