MENTAL-HEALTH VULNERABILITY AND EMOTIONAL DISTRESS AMONG YOUTH FROM DISRUPTED FAMILIES: AN EXTENDED SOCIAL SUPPORT MODEL

This study examines the relationship between mental-health vulnerability and emotional distress among young people from disrupted families and extends the original model by introducing perceived social support as a moderator. A quantitative, cross-sectional survey was administered anonymously to 100 purposively selected respondents. The original instrument measured anxiety, sadness, low self-confidence, emotional dysregulation, insecurity, concentration problems, irritability, low motivation, social withdrawal, and sleep disturbance. The baseline results indicate a positive and significant association between vulnerability and emotional-distress scores (B = 0.270; t = 3.215; p = 0.002; R² = 0.588). Because the dependent items were negatively worded, higher scores represent poorer emotional well-being. The extended model proposes that support from family, friends, teachers, and other trusted adults can directly reduce distress and weaken the effect of vulnerability. Social support was not measured in the original dataset; therefore, its moderating effect is presented as a testable extension rather than a completed empirical finding.
